What Makes an Individual a Christian - Part 1

An individual must be exposed to the Word of God, the Gospel of Jesus Christ, to become a Christian (follower of Christ).

By: Hearing the Word of God

Romans 10:17 “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God ["word of Christ"].”

Note: Words in [teal] are inserted for explanations, identifications, or additional information. Additional verses are located at the end of passages to help with more understanding.

Scripture Readings:

John 1:1-17

1. "In the beginning was the Word [Logos/eternal Jesus; 1 John 1:1], and the Word [Revelation 9:13] was with [John 17:4-5] God, and the Word was God [Godhead emphasis]1 John 5:20

Jesus, the Son of God, lived in eternity with God the Father before the foundations of the earth were laid during Creation.

Logos:  It is vital to understand the word "logos." This title is one of Jesus' most important. It literally means "Word" and is used over 1,200 times in the Scriptures referring to God's message - Jesus, the inspired Word. Every Christian should read and study the Bible to learn about Jesus the Christ; incarnate Word of God and inspired Word of God. 2 Timothy 3:16; John 1:1; Genesis 15:1

2. The same was in the beginning with God. Genesis 1:1

3. All things were made by him; and without him was not anything made that was made.
Colossians 1:16, 17

4. In him was life [salvation through Christ Jesus]; and the life was the light [revelation of God by Jesus] of men. 1 John 5:11; John 8:12; 9:5; 12:46

5. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended [apprehended] it not. John 3:19

6. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John [John the Baptist]John 1:19-34

7. The same came for a witness [tell about], to bear witness of the Light [eternal Jesus], that all men through him might believe. John 3:25-36; John 5:33-35; John 3:16

8. He was not that Light, but was sent [came] to bear witness of that Light. Isaiah 9:2; Isaiah 49:6

9. That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world.

10. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew [recognized] him not.
Hebrews 1:2

11. He came unto his own [the Jews and the world], and his own received him not. Luke 19:14; Isaiah 53:3

12. But as many as received him, to them gave he power [right/authority] to become the sons [children] of God, even to them that believe on his name ["believe on his name" is to "take" Jesus Christ as one's Savior]Galatians 3:26

13. Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
1 Peter 1:23

14. And the Word was made flesh [became flesh], and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth [doctrine]Revelation 19:13; Galatians 4:4; Hebrews 2:11; Isaiah 40:5; John 8:32; John 14:6; John 18:37

15. John bare witness of him, and cried, saying, He that cometh after me is preferred [greater/of higher rank] before me: for he was before me. John 3:32; Matthew 3:11; Colossians 1:17

16. And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. Colossians 1:19; Colossians 2:9

The Word of God is inspired:

Proverbs 30:5 "Every word of God [inspired Scripture/Gospel of Christ] is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him."

Man shall live by every word of God:

Luke 4:3-4 "And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread. 4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God." (Hebrews 4:15; James 1:13; Deuteronomy 8:3)

For those who hear and keep the word of God, they are blessed:

Luke 11:27-28 "And it came to pass, as he spake these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up  her voice, and said unto him, Blessed is the womb that bare thee, and the paps which thou hast sucked. 28 But he [Jesus] said, Yea rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it."

The Word of God is the power of God unto salvation:

Look up and read:  Romans 1:1-20 (emphasis on 1:16)

The Word of God should be read, studied, and applied to living:

Ephesians 6:13-17 "Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all [overcome all], to stand. 14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt [girded] about with the truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness,"

Other Scripture regarding the Word of God:

Look up and read:  Luke 8:5-11 (emphasis on verse 11)

1 Thessalonians 2:11-13 "As ye know how we exhorted [urged] and comforted and charged [directed] every one of you, as a father doth his children, 12 That ye would walk worthy of God, who hath called you unto his kingdom and glory. 13 For this cause [reason] also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worth also in you that believe."

Hebrews 4:12 "For the word of God is quick [living], and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing [division] asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner [able to judge] of the thoughts and intents of the heart."

Revelation 19:13 "And he [Jesus Christ] was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God."
